Moldova has a well established wine industry and a rich history of wine-making traditions and viticulture. Situated south-east of Europe and sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is a fertile land with beautiful vineyards and real diversity of wines. It has the same latitude as Burgundy and the climate is moderately continental with influence from the Black Sea. As with other wine regions in Europe, the vineyards have a terroir which is suited to the production of quality red wine in the southern regions and mainly white in the central part of the country. Moldova has over 112,00 hectares of vineyards planted with over 30 types of varieties. There are four historical wine regions: Valul lui Traian (south west), Stefan Voda (south east), Codru (centre) and Balto (north).
