Gruner-Veltiner literally translates as ‘green grape fruit the village of Veltlin’ which was an area in the lower Alps during the 1600’s and is now part of Valtellina, Italy. Whilst it is Austria’s most widely planted grape variety it is also one of the primary white grapes in Hungary. This wine hails from the Pannin region where it is known locally as Zoldveltelini.
